Upgrades Coming for the Aquarena

Jul 18th, 2023

The Works

As previously announced, the Aquarena will be undergoing extensive renovations. These upgrades to the Aquarena support the Canada Games standards required to ensure that athletes from across Canada can enjoy a safe, excellent, sporting experience in August 2025.

The Aquarena was constructed for the 1977 Canada Games and many of its building systems need upgrades to continue to operate all programming and services that support recreation and high-performance sport.

The tender was recently awarded for the Aquarena renovation. As of September 2023, the facility will be turned over to CAN-AM Platform & Construction Ltd., the general contractor awarded the contract for upgrades to the Aquarena sport facility.

Efforts will be made toward the earliest possible return of the facility for elite athlete training. The schedule for a full reopening to the public will be determined once the contractor provides a detailed schedule. We will release further information to all our stakeholders as it is available.

We understand the impact this will have on the Aquarena’s operations, patrons of the facility, as well as business continuity implications. There have been extensive conversations to mitigate these impacts by Memorial University Recreational Complex (MURC), in partnership with other organizations, including the City of St. John’s.

Current Aquarena memberships will be transferred to full access memberships at the Field House. The Field House will be realigning operations to the needs of current member to ensure access to facilities for all members.
